Press Release

Drogheda and District Support 4 Older People, the local charitable organisation that provides an array of services which aim to support older people in all aspects of their lives has introduced Befriending Drogheda to the list. Befriending Drogheda will match older people with a suitable volunteer who will visit them at home on a regular basis. Our volunteer Befrienders are trained and Garda vetted to provide a confidential visit in the surroundings of a person’s own home. Our volunteer befrienders will visit, for an hour a week as a friend; they are not carers or home help so can focus on making a personal connection and a friendship with people who often have no one to talk to.

What will you get from this friendship?

A weekly visit at home from someone who will –

Listen to you, and talk to you about your interests.
Take you out on short trips,
Introduce you to other services that may help you.
Assist you to attend our events.
Act as an advocate for your issues and needs.
A new friend with your best interests at heart.

Our Befriending volunteers will be supported through training and have ongoing contact with the coordinator. As always volunteers are an integral and vibrant force in the services of DDS4OP. The need for this new service was established through speaking to people on the Good Morning Drogheda phone line and the experience of the Care and Repair Team who meet people in their homes.

Befriending Drogheda is part of National Befriending Network organised by ALONE, who work with organisations providing befriending services nationally. ALONE have provided us with training for our volunteers, and offer support and guidance for the coordinator of our service.
